Arshad Nadeem Leads Men’s Javelin Final at Asian Athletics Championship with 85.57m Throw
Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem delivered a stunning 85.57m throw to take the lead in the men’s javelin final at the Asian Athletics Championship in Gumi, South Korea.
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who was leading earlier with a throw of 82.28m, now stands in second place. China’s Hu Haoran recorded a season-best of 80.93m to claim third spot after the third round of throws. The trio are the only athletes so far to have surpassed the 80-meter mark in the final.
Nadeem’s performance built steadily, starting with throws of 75.64m and 76.80m in his first two attempts. Meanwhile, fellow Pakistani thrower Yasir registered 70.53m and 75.39m.
As Nadeem prepared for his first throw — last in the lineup — the stadium erupted with patriotic energy, with “Dil Dil Pakistan” playing as the crowd waited in anticipation. The javelin star did not disappoint.
In the heats held yesterday, Nadeem easily qualified for the final with an impressive 86.34m on his first and only attempt. Yasir had managed a 76.07m throw in the heats.
After securing his place in the final, Nadeem took to Instagram, saying, “As always I would need your support and prayers.”
Last August, Nadeem made history by setting a new Olympic record with a 92.97m throw in Paris, securing the gold medal in the men’s javelin final.
Up next, Nadeem is set to travel to England for training in preparation for the World Athletics Championships in September.
